SOROTI - The Soroti Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded Jackline Amuge, the prime suspect in the murder of Moses Ejou, an instructor at Soroti Vocational Training Institute.

Amuge appeared before Chief Magistrate Hilda Bakansa Walaga on May 12, 2025, where she was formally charged with murder. She pleaded not guilty.

According to the prosecution, led by Paul Okello, Amuge and others still at large are accused of killing Ejou during the night of April 22-23, 2025, in Nakatunya ward, Soroti city.

Ejou, who taught in the Department of Automotives and served as patron of the Scouts Club at the institute, was found dead with severe head injuries caused by a sharp object. His body had reportedly been dumped along a street in Nakatunya.

Police say investigations are ongoing, and a manhunt is underway for other suspects believed to be linked to the brutal killing.

Institutional background

Ejou was not only a seasoned instructor in the Department of Automotives but also a mentor deeply committed to student development. As patron of the Scouts Club, he was recognised for his discipline, mentorship, and dedication to youth empowerment.

Colleagues described him as principled and passionate about technical education and community service.

His lifeless body was discovered on the morning of April 23, 2025. Police confirmed that he had sustained deep head injuries, likely inflicted with a sharp object. The gruesome nature of the crime and the public disposal of the body indicated a calculated and violent attack.

Motive and links

Residents reported hearing a commotion during the night, but the body was not discovered until morning when it was spotted by passers-by. Police promptly cordoned off the area and began their investigation.

Initial findings suggested foul play, and a major breakthrough came with the arrest of Amuge, a resident of Soroti city. While her precise connection to the deceased has not been publicly disclosed, sources close to the investigation allege a personal relationship may have existed.

Amuge has denied the charges, and the court has since remanded her as inquiries continue. Authorities say additional suspects remain at large, and a manhunt is in progress.

Community reaction

The case has stirred widespread concern, prompting local leaders and civil society groups to urge police to expedite investigations.

Students at Soroti Vocational Training Institute held a candlelight vigil in honour of Ejou, calling for justice and better security on campus.

The murder has reignited discussions around personal safety, domestic-related violence, and the vulnerability of educators in socially volatile environments.

As the case unfolds, the Soroti community remains attentive, hoping for justice and closure in what has become one of the city's most high-profile killings of the year.
