In a display of unity and compassion, the President’s office has donated food items to its Muslim staff as a way of celebrating with them the completion of the holy month of Ramadan.

Amb. Abbey Walusimbi, the senior presidential advisor on diaspora affairs, who extended the Iftar donations to the employees at the Office of the President on Tuesday ahead of Idd-al-Fitr celebrations, emphasised the significance of fasting in the Islamic faith and the values of empathy and generosity.

Walusimbi, alongside Mohammed Yousuf, the managing director of Medvin Pharma Ltd, distributed Iftar packages to both Muslims and non-Muslims within the office premises.

Speaking at the occasion, Walusimbi highlighted the spiritual significance of Ramadan and the importance of compassion towards those in need.

"Fasting not only brings individuals closer to God but also fosters a sense of empathy and compassion for others," he said, adding: "It is heartening to see unity and generosity displayed by our diverse community during this sacred month".

The distributed food packages, included meat, rice, sugar, dates and cooking oil. 

Betty Zalwango, the senior human resource manager in the office, expressed gratitude on behalf of the staff for the timely donations.

The event also saw Mohammed Yousuf Pasha, the owner of Medvin Pharma Limited, share his journey from being an immigrant worker to a successful entrepreneur in Uganda. Pasha's inspiring story underscored the welcoming spirit and opportunities offered by Uganda.

Under Pasha's leadership since 2009, Medvin Pharma has grown into a multi-million dollar enterprise with 20 branches across Uganda and extensions into neighbouring countries. 

This year's Iftar food distribution event reached out to 420 individuals, providing them with essential food items to aid in their Ramadan observance. Walusimbi emphasised the broader impact of such initiatives in fostering inter-community harmony and understanding, showcasing Uganda's commitment to inclusivity and solidarity.

"Our collective efforts today ensure that every person, every child feels the warmth and unity of our great nation. It is through these acts of kindness and solidarity that we build a stronger and more inclusive Uganda," Walusimbi said.

He said the event served as a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness between Uganda and the global community, particularly through the lens of economic and healthcare contributions.

The event also highlighted the broader economic contributions of the Indian community in Uganda, which extend beyond the pharmaceutical sector.

Indian investments in Uganda span various sectors, including agriculture, technology and manufacturing, contributing to job creation, technology transfer, and overall economic growth, the ambassador said.
