President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni, who is also the Minister of Education & Sports, on Tuesday afternoon, took part in the ongoing mass registration and renewal exercise of national identity cards.

This happened at State Lodge, Nakasero in Kampala.

The project is being implemented by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).

At Nakasero, the renewal exercise was "efficiently" conducted by a team from NIRA led by executive director Rosemary Kisembo, according to a statement from the President's press team.

The mass registration exercise, which kicked off last month (May), involves replacing the national identity cards that have expired as well as fresh registration.

During his State of the Nation Address last Thursday, President Museveni underlined the importance of national IDs.

"The IDs will be used to identify voters in the forthcoming elections to prevent fraud. Therefore, I urge you all to embrace the registration exercise," he told the nation.

The registration of citizens is regarded as a crucial component of national security, ensuring that every individual is accounted for within the nation's identity framework.

Enhanced biometric technology associated with these ID cards provides a reliable and unalterable means of establishing identity.

It is an initiative that underscores the government's commitment to strengthening national identity systems and fostering socio-economic transformation.
