Investigators have attributed the cause of the accident to reckless riding and driving. Police officers visited the scene and impounded three motorcycles along with the Mitsubishi vehicle.

Kituuma further noted that it had earlier been reported that campaign boards displaying images of Kyagulanyi were placed in the middle of the road, obstructing traffic.

KAMPALA - Police have urged all politicians and their entourages to comply with traffic laws during the campaigns leading to the general election next year.

The call comes in the wake of a serious Monday, September 29, 2025, road crash on the Kalagi-Kayunga Road near Namyoya village, involving motorcycles and vehicles escorting National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential flag-bearer Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine. The crash occurred at about 11:30am.

Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma, while addressing journalists at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, on Tuesday, said: Preliminary reports indicate that one motorcycle in the convoy, travelling at high speed, collided with a vehicle from behind, triggering a chain reaction where multiple motorcycles crashed into one another.

Following this, a white Mitsubishi vehicle, registration number UAZ 064H, displaying images of the aspirant, also collided with the motorcycles involved in the crash.

He said several people sustained injuries and were transported to St Francis Naggalama Hospital for medical attention. Some with minor injuries left the scene with their motorcycles.

“The accident has been officially recorded at Naggalama Police Station. The vehicles involved include the Mitsubishi UAZ 064H and motorcycles with registration numbers UFQ 569H, UGH 892B, UEK 351T, UFQ 250Q, among others, which have since been removed from the site,” he added.

Police have named those who were injured and say most of them were motorcycle riders or passengers, including Bashir Kewanza, 27;  Bashir Kakaire, 35; Musa Ssepereza, 40; Michael Kisomba, 28, from Nansana; Eric Ssewaya, 23 and  Robert Mutagubya, 24.

He explained that initial investigations point to reckless riding and driving as the cause of the crash.

Varying conditions

Kituuma said the casualties are in varying conditions. “Kewanza sustained multiple injuries, including a maxillary fracture, while Kakaire also suffered multiple wounds.

Ssepereza sustained multiple injuries and a right leg fracture. Together with Mutagubya, who also suffered fractures and wounds, they were referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialised treatment,” he said.

“Kisomba has multiple injuries, including a right leg fracture and chest pain and remains admitted at St Francis Naggalama Hospital, where Ssewaya is also receiving treatment for multiple injuries,” he added.

“We issue a strong warning to all political actors and their entourages. Irresponsible use of the roads, as demonstrated in this incident that caused multiple injuries, will not be tolerated.

The Police will enforce strict measures to prevent such conduct and ensure adherence to traffic laws,” Kituuma warned.

He urged all political groups to comply fully with traffic regulations to avoid a repeat of such incidents as the campaign season heats up.
