LIRA - Police in Lira City's West Division, aided by community support, on December 10, 2024, arrested 34 individuals during an intelligence-driven sweep of identified criminal hotspots.

The suspects—25 men and 9 women—are alleged members of gangs involved in various crimes, including robbery, housebreaking, and substance abuse involving opium, aviation fuel and illicit alcohol, which had plagued the areas of Kampshwali, Te-Atat, Te-Dam, and Te-Kulu.

The targeted areas had been flagged as high-crime zones during police community policing sessions conducted across Lira City West Division.

Residents had raised concerns about escalating criminal activity, calling for police action.

“These areas had become notorious for gang-related activities. Suspects often terrorised civilians by robbing them of personal belongings such as phones, wallets, and handbags,” said Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Police spokesperson.

“Some are also accused of breaking into houses and stealing property, leaving residents in fear,” he added.

Community coordination

The success of the operation was largely attributed to the strong collaboration between the police and residents, who provided crucial information on the activities of the suspected gangs.

Okema praised the community for its proactive approach to fighting crime.

“We sincerely thank the community for their cooperation. Their timely sharing of information shows their commitment to fighting crime in their neighbourhoods,” SP Okema said.

Suspects in custody

All 34 suspects are currently in police custody. Statements are being recorded, and case files are being prepared for submission to the resident chief state attorney for legal review and advice on potential charges.

The charges are likely to include theft, drug use, and other offences related to their alleged criminal activities, according to Okema.

He assured the public that thorough investigations would be conducted to ensure justice was served.

“We are compiling the suspects’ files and will leave no stone unturned in holding them accountable for their actions,” he said.

Why the operations

The operations in Lira City are part of broader efforts by the Uganda Police Force to ensure a peaceful festive season by cracking down on criminal elements.

“We encourage residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities. This partnership is essential for maintaining law and order,” Okema stated.

Community policing

The police spokesperson also highlighted the role of community policing in identifying crime-prone areas and fostering trust between law enforcement and residents.

“Through community policing, we’ve been able to identify key hotspots and plan strategic operations. It’s a collaborative effort that demonstrates the power of working together,” he said.

“The fight against crime requires a united front. We appeal to the community to keep supporting us in our mission to create a safe and secure environment for everyone,” SP Okema concluded.
