The territorial police in Kanungu district have launched investigations into the suspected murder of an unidentified woman whose body was discovered tied with ropes and stuffed in a sack, floating in River Ntungwa.

According to police, the body was found on the afternoon of August 2, 2024, by young boys who were fishing along the river in Kanabizo cell, Ntungwa parish, Nyamirama subcounty.

At around 3.00pm, the boys noticed a green sack stuck in the water and, upon checking, saw a lifeless body inside.

They immediately alerted the area chairperson, Emmanuel Byamukama, who dispatched his defence secretary, David Kasigeire, to report the matter to police.

A team of detectives, led by the scene of crime officer, visited and documented the scene before retrieving the body. It was taken to Kanungu Health Centre IV mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Police say the body was still fresh, suggesting the woman may have been killed earlier that morning before being dumped in the river.

Kigezi region police spokesperson, Elly Maate, said efforts are underway to identify the victim and track down those behind the murder.

“Anyone with a missing relative is urged to visit the mortuary for possible identification so the deceased can receive a decent burial,” Maate said.

Investigations continue to establish the motive and those responsible.
