A vehicle stolen from Buloba in Wakiso district has been recovered in Mukono district after a successful co-ordination between the Police and the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS).

The Toyota Fielder with digital number plate UA 812 AW was reported missing on Monday, May 26, 2025, according to Police Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson Michael Kananura.

Kanaura, on May 27, posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the theft was immediately registered by the car-owner at the Central Police Station.

"Acting swiftly, the police officer who received the report alerted the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System. Through real-time tracking, the system successfully located the stolen vehicle near Ntawo in Mukono, at geographical coordinates latitude 0.392533 and longitude 32.736718," Kananura said, urging the public to always report such incidents promptly to the nearest Police station to facilitate immediate tracking and recovery.

ITMIS

The Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) was introduced in Uganda in 2023 by the government as part of a broader strategy to enhance road safety, public security, and crime prevention.

Every new vehicle now carries a digital number plate under the system, which integrates GPS tracking and real-time data sharing with police systems. Authorities say this innovation will revolutionise crime detection, traffic management, and emergency response.

ITMIS spokesperson Priscah Pearl Ayesiga says when a vehicle is stolen, it is essential to report it to the nearest Police station immediately.

She said this allows them to “register the incident with the CID and initiate an investigation, increasing the chances of recovery. By reporting promptly, you can help the police track down your vehicle and bring it back to you.”
