A sombre mood engulfed Chondo village in Rukongi Parish, Nyarusiza sub-county, Kisoro district, when news emerged of the sudden death of Flavia Mulakigeri, a 35-year-old woman battling breast cancer.

Mulakigeri's valiant struggle against the debilitating disease spanned three years, during which she sought treatment at the Cancer Institute in Mbarara, according to the Police.

However, her health took a turn for the worse on March 20, 2024, prompting her loved ones to rush her to Mbarara for urgent medical attention.

After several days of treatment, Mulakigeri was discharged on March 22, 2024.

Accompanied by a caregiver, they embarked on the journey back to Kisoro, boarding a bus. Tragically, fate intervened during their journey, and Mulakigeri breathed her last near Ntungamo.

Elly Maate, Police public relations officer for the Kigezi region said: "In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the caregiver chose to remain silent about Mulakigeri passing until they reached Kisoro around 6:00 pm. Subsequently, authorities were notified, and police swiftly responded to the scene."

Upon arrival, the district scene of crime officers and a team of detectives documented the scene, gathering vital evidence.

Statements were obtained from relevant witnesses as preparations were made to transport Flavia's body to Kisoro Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
