The police in Kyenjojo district are investigating a case of suspected murder and cannibalism following the discovery of human remains at a suspect’s home in Kyarusozi town council.

The case came to light on May 2, 2026, after the area LC1 chairman, Asaba Aheebwa, reported concerns raised by residents over the disappearance of 35-year-old Lukia Karungo.

Karungo, a peasant from Binunda cell, had reportedly not been seen in the community for about one and a half months.

According to police, residents suspected that Karungo could have been at the home of her former partner, Richard Mwesige, also known as Baby Nsolo, a 40-year-old resident of Kihara cell. The suspect had reportedly been linked to allegations of practising cannibalism.

The chairman, together with residents, reported the matter to the police at Kyarusozi. Officers, led by the officer in charge, proceeded to the suspect’s residence, where a search was conducted.

Vicent Twesige, the Rwenzori West Police spokesperson, said that during the search, officers reportedly discovered a foul-smelling polythene bag hanging from the roof of the house.

Upon inspection, it was found to contain a human head. Further examination of the house led to the recovery of bones and clothing, including a skirt and underwear, which were identified as belonging to the missing woman.

“The suspect was immediately arrested, and a case of murder was opened,” Twesige said.

Police said the scene was visited and documented by detectives, homicide officers and scenes of crime personnel. The recovered remains have since been taken to Kyenjojo General Hospital for postmortem examination and DNA analysis.

The regional police spokesperson also revealed that preliminary findings indicate that both the deceased and the suspect had previously been regarded by some residents as mentally unstable.

Authorities also revealed that the suspect presented a three-month-old baby boy, whom Mwesige is believed to have fathered with the deceased.

Twesige further said that investigations into the matter are ongoing as the police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
