Busia district police are investigating the sudden death of an elderly man, identified only as Mzee Kuma, who collapsed inside a drinking joint in Marachi on the morning of April 26, 2026, and died before doctors could attend to him.
Moses Mugwe, police spokesperson for Bukedi South Region, said the incident was reported by Dr Ayoma, a female physician attached to Busia Health Centre IV, at around midday on Sunday.
According to Mugwe, two men who were present at the drinking joint rushed Mzee Kuma onto a motorcycle and transported him to Red Cross Hospital for emergency treatment. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
Dr Ayoma subsequently contacted the police, and a case of sudden death was registered under DEF 024/2026.
Statements have been recorded from the two men who transported the deceased to hospital. Police Form 48A has been completed and submitted to the hospital to facilitate a post-mortem examination.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the deceased struggled with alcoholism and had no fixed place of residence in the area.
Police say inquiries into the circumstances of his death are ongoing.
