Police officers who were patrolling Kampala city have foiled an armed robbery in Nakawa Division, killing one suspected robber and recovering a firearm along with several items believed to have been stolen from previous victims.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in Ssemwogerere Zone, Nakawa Division.

Kawala said preliminary investigations indicate that at about 12:50am, a businessman and his wife were walking along Mukasa Road when they were confronted by three armed men.

“The suspects ordered the couple to stop and lie down, which they complied with. The robbers then stole the man’s mobile phone and wallet at gunpoint before turning their attention to the woman and demanding her phone,” Kawala said.

She explained that as the robbery was unfolding, police officers conducting routine motorcycle patrols in the area arrived at the scene.

“Upon noticing the presence of police, the suspects abandoned their mission and fled. In the process, they left behind a bag containing suspected stolen property and a rifle,” she added.

Police officers immediately pursued the fleeing suspects. During the operation, one unidentified male suspect, believed to be about 25 years old, was shot dead.

Kawala said the officers recovered several exhibits from the scene, including an SAR rifle and a bayonet.

Other items recovered included four smartphones suspected to be stolen, two black shaving machines, three black jackets, an empty cartridge, a screwdriver, a pair of red canvas shoes and a black laptop bag.

“The recovered items are being examined as part of ongoing investigations to establish whether they are linked to other robbery incidents reported in the Kampala Metropolitan area,” Kawala said.

The body of the deceased suspect was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination, while efforts are underway to identify him and trace his accomplices who remain at large.

Kawala commended the patrol officers for their swift response, saying their timely intervention prevented the robbers from causing further harm to the victims.

She urged members of the public to continue cooperating with police by reporting suspicious persons and activities in their communities as investigations into the incident continue.
