Police nabs prime suspects in murder of Sheema businessman

Police in Greater Bushenyi have confirmed the arrest of prime suspects in connection with the murder of a prominent Sheema Municipality businessman, Edson Betware.

The Greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, said the four key suspects were arrested between March 11 and March 22, 2026, following sustained investigations into the aggravated robbery and murder.

He named them as: Nahamya Ovid alias Acram, Tayebwa Cosma, Amanya Jordan alias Piza, and Natuhamya Naboth, all are aged 30 and residents of Sheema District.

The number of suspects now grows to seven suspects already on remand, including Kaweesi Mashudi Oyo, Kato Hussein Jingo and Mukombozi Mazinga, who were arraigned earlier this month.

The three suspects were earlier arrested based on canine-linked circumstantial evidence. Investigations are still ongoing,” he said.

Tayebwa said the case file has been resubmitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for perusal and further legal guidance.

Betware was a well-known businessman dealing in Coca-Cola products. He owned Nebs Bar and a wholesale shop in Kabwohe Town, Sheema municipality.

Background

On July 28, 2025, at around 6:10am, Betware, 63, of Rutooma Cell in Kabwohe Division, was ambushed by unknown assailants just outside his gate, as he left home for work.

The assailants hit him on the head and robbed him of his bag containing keys, money and a mobile phone.

Despite sustaining serious injuries, he managed to walk to his business premises, Nebs Bar in Kabwohe Town, where he collapsed.

Colleagues rushed him to Bushenyi Medical Centre Hospital and he was later referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police later deployed a canine unit, which led to the arrest of an initial suspect. A blood-stained piece of wood believed to have been used in the attack was recovered.
