In the face of a concerning uptick in criminal incidents involving private security guards, the Police have stepped in with a series of initiatives aimed at quelling violence and promoting responsible firearm handling within the industry.

Recent reports have highlighted a range of troubling events, including clashes between private security personnel, assaults against clients at various establishments such as petrol stations and residential properties, and instances of negligent firearm management.

Addressing these pressing issues, Police have enacted measures to crack down on errant behaviour within the private security sector.

This includes the arrest of individuals found in breach of guidelines, seizure of mishandled firearms, and the suspension or revocation of operating licences for non-compliant private security organisations (PSOs).

“Since the start of the year, 20 PSOs have faced suspension, with an additional seven having their licences cancelled” According to Police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

During the weekly joint security briefing on Monday, April 22, 2024, he made the revelations at the force’s headquarters in Naguru, Kampala.

Enanga said the force’s Directorate of Operations is working hand in hand with PSOs to raise awareness of key security threats, share vital data on concerning behaviour, and enhance auditing processes for firearm control.

He said the Directorate of Crime Intelligence is also conducting thorough background checks and re-vetting procedures for security personnel while actively pursuing leads on firearm misuse.

To standardise training protocols, the UPF has developed a comprehensive curriculum tailored specifically for private security personnel.

Additionally, efforts are underway to bolster partnerships with the Association of PSOs, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in improving overall security standards.
