Following police summons over alleged failure to provide basic necessities for his wife and children, Innocent Muhabwe, 34, lost his cool and turned violent.
He threatened local leaders and went ahead to cut down banana plantations belonging to the area chairperson.
Muhabwe later picked an axe from a neighbour and ran back home where he unleashed his anger on his wife.
He hacked her to death, shocking many residents who first fled for life. He was, however, surrounded and overpowered by the police and residents.
The incident happened on June 02, 2026, at Katojo Central Village, Katojo Parish, Masheruka Sub-county, Sheema District, but it was reported to police the following day on June 3.
The Greater Bushenyi Regional police spokesperson, Apollo Tayebwa, in a statement identified the deceased as Edrida Tuhaisomwe, 45, who is alleged to have earlier on complained about her husband’s conduct whenever she asked for necessities for the children.
According to Tayebwa, preliminary investigations indicated that the incident arose from a domestic dispute after the deceased reported a case of failure by her husband to provide basic necessities for their children.
He explained that instead, the suspect accused local leaders of interfering in his home affairs and threatened to harm them.
Muhabwe went ahead to damage the chairperson’s banana plantation.
“That very night before the police were updated about the new offences of cutting the chairman’s plantation, the suspect armed himself with an axe and fatally attacked and killed his wife on spot at their home,” Tayebwa explained.
The police visited and documented the scene, recovered the murder weapon, and conveyed the body to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for a postmortem.
“We strongly condemn such forms of domestic violence and urge members of the public to always timely seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving family disputes,” Tayebwa said, adding that investigations were still ongoing, and that the public will accordingly be updated on any significant developments.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pray for the eternal repose of the deceased,” he said.
The suspect, he explained, would be taken to court when their investigations are complete to face charges of murder.
