Police detectives in Kyankwanzi district are hunting for people linked to the mob which killed Amon Senkula, who allegedly killed two people.

Senkula is accused of killing one Awali Ssentongo and his pregnant wife, Doreen Ayebare, on February 14.

The mob reportedly attacked Senkula while leading the detective from Ntunda Police station to a forest in Balulimya village, Ndairinga ward, in Ntunda sub-county, where he claimed to have hidden the exhibit weapon, which he allegedly used to kill the couple.

"A swarm of an angry mob armed with pangas, sticks, clubs, stones, bricks, spears, among other weapons, descended on their suspect and killed him on the spot on February 17," narrated Savannah regional Police spokesperson, Lameka Kigozi.

The genesis

After the couple’s (Ssentongo and his wife Ayebare) murder, police picked up clues from the scene of the crime with some circumstantial evidence that zeroed in on Senkula, who had just been released from prison on bail in mid-December 2025.

Senkula was also accused of the alleged attempted murder of Kamada Karume and the kidnapping of Esther Kamwine.

Double murder

Investigations indicated that on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14), Senkula attacked the couple at their home and violently cut them while demanding cash to spare their lives.

“He stabbed Ssentongo several times and killed him instantly, before he turned to Ayebare, accusing her of making an alarm. He (Senkula) stabbed her in the ribs, leading to her death with her unborn child,” one of the eyewitnesses told New Vision.

Residents described Senkula as a dangerous person with no known place of abode.

“He had turned into a bushman who would come out from the bush at night to execute his missions and go back into hiding. Imagine he confessed to having killed the couple with their unborn child, saying that he wanted money from them,” a police source revealed.

Police report

The 2024 annual crime Police report indicates that mob justice has persisted despite the continued effort by the police’s community policing department. This is, however, attributed to the public frustration with the judicial system and lack of trust in law enforcement.

The report, however, shows a slight decline of 2.2% in the total number of recorded mob justice cases countrywide, that is to say, (from 1,039, which were registered in 20231, to 1,016 cases, registered in 2024). According to Police findings, the vice is common in districts including Mad-Okollo, Kyegegwa, Mpigi, Kakumiro, Buikwe, and Luweero.
