KAMPALA - Police have dismissed reports that Opposition politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, was arrested after a helicopter reportedly hovered around his home on Friday, January 16, 2026 night.

The claims, which circulated widely, suggested that Kyagulanyi was later picked up by armed personnel. However, Police have today January 17, strongly refuted the allegations, describing them as false and misleading.

Addressing the media on Saturday morning at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Kampala, Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said there was no reason for the arrest of Kyagulanyi. He clarified that the Opposition leader remains at his home in Magere, Wakiso district.

Kituuma explained that Magere is one of the identified security hotspots where Police, alongside other security agencies, have deployed personnel to maintain law and order.

When asked whether journalists would be allowed to visit Kyagulanyi for interviews, Kituuma indicated that access would be subject to vetting.

“That is a decision we shall make later. We are closely monitoring movement to and from his home, including the entire Magere area,” Kituuma said.

He also reassured the public of their safety and urged Ugandans to continue with their daily activities, noting that security remains fully in control. His remarks came in response to concerns that fear had led to the closure of several businesses in the city centre.

Below is the statement

Statement on alleged arrest of Hon Kyagulanyi Sentamu

Allegations are being made that Kyagulanyi Sentamu has been arrested and taken to an unknown location.

These are deceitful and inciteful allegations intended to depict the security agencies and brutal violators of rights of a political candidate.

Kyagulanyi is at his home in Magere in Waksiso district.

If we were to arrest him, we would make it known and the reasons for his arrest.
We implore Ugandans to maintain calmness.

We also urge political actors to act responsibly.  There is no justification for inciting violence for political expediency.
