Police on Friday, April 17, 2026, confirmed they had arrested six students of Nkoma Senior Secondary School who assaulted a fellow student from Mbale Progressive Secondary School and also stole his phone.
Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest, saying, “we are holding six students of Nkoma SS who robbed and assaulted a S4 student of Mbale Progressive Secondary School. Mbale City Northern Division is investigating a case of aggravated robbery.”
He said the matter was reported to the police on April 14, 2026, at 5:00 pm.
“It occurred at Nabuyonga Rise, Kichafu Cell, Namakwekwe Ward, Northern Division,
Mbale City. The complainant is Siraj Buyinza, a male adult, 20 years of age and a student at Mbale Progressive Secondary School, resident of Buyonjo Cell, Nkoma Ward, Northern Division, Mbale City,” Taitika added.
The suspects arrested include; Abudu Kadiru – S.2F; John Mwesigwa– S.2C, James Nabigwa Opolot– S.2F, Patrick Weboya-S.2B, Eddie Magomu-S.2B and Brian Wadonyi– S.2F.
Explaining the incident, Taitika said, “It is alleged that on April 14 2026, at about 5:00pm the six suspects, while armed with a knife, assaulted and robbed Buyinza, an S.4 student of Mbale Progressive S.S, along Nabuyonga Rise. They took his Infinix Smart 6 smartphone and cash amounting to sh20,000. Both the victim and the suspects are day scholars who were returning home from school at the time. The victim identified the suspects. A video clip of the incident, recorded by a passerby, is also circulating on social media,” Taitika noted.
He said following the incident, the victim reported to Nkoma Police Station, where a case of aggravated robbery was registered.
Police action taken
Taitika said the victim was interviewed and medically examined on Police Form 3. A team of officers visited and documented the crime scene.
Six suspects were arrested in connection with the robbery, and a knife, the weapon allegedly used during the incident, was recovered.
“The matter remains under investigation and inquiries are ongoing,” he added.
