A motorcycle passenger was crushed to death on March 24, 2026, after a parked motor vehicle rolled backwards and collided with an oncoming motorcycle on School Road in Arua city. The driver of the vehicle is still at large.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:30pm on School Road in Arua Public Cell, Burser ward, Central division, Arua city.
Josephine Angucia, police spokesperson for West Nile Region, identified the deceased as Amayo Alex, who was travelling as a passenger on the motorcycle.
"The rider of the motorcycle was seriously injured and has been rushed to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for treatment," Angucia said.
She added that: "The body of the deceased was taken to the hospital mortuary pending post-mortem. Details of the motorcycle rider were not captured at the scene as he was immediately rushed for medical attention."
Angucia said preliminary investigations indicate the vehicle, a white Fuso Mitsubishi, registration number UAY 366U, had been parked along the road while the driver loaded goods at a nearby kiosk.
"It is alleged that the motor vehicle started rolling backwards on its own and collided with an incoming motorcycle travelling at high speed," she said.
According to Angucia, the rider struck the rear of the vehicle. Both the rider and passenger fell, and the vehicle's tyre ran over the head of the passenger, who died on the spot.
The motorcycle, registration number UFC 098T, a red Bajaj, has been recovered. Both vehicles are parked at Arua Central Police Station yard pending an Inspector of Vehicles examination.
The driver of the motor vehicle has not been identified and is reported to have fled the scene. Police have described the preliminary cause of the accident as the use of a motor vehicle in dangerous mechanical condition.
The case is registered as Arua City Central Business Division TAR 58/2026. Investigations are continuing.
Angucia called on vehicle owners to maintain their vehicles properly.
"We urge owners of vehicles to always service them before use on the road in order to prevent such deadly accidents," she said.
