Pakwach district's Alwi sub-county residents say piped water will go a long way in curing one of the most pressing issues in their community: Water scarcity.
The sub-county is the only water-stressed area in the district, causing many of the residents to move long distances in search of water.
Now that it is the 2026 general election campaign season for all political leaders, the residents believe that it is now the time for them to sound the alarm on some of their grievances. They believe serious leaders will hear their cry and come to their rescue.
The Government initiated the Alwi dry corridor water project that mainly benefited a few residents at the roadside of the sub-county, with the majority being residents of Panyimur and Wadelai sub-counties.
Pangieth parish LC2 councillor Blaise Apena says they are facing a challenge of accessing water.
"Our women move long distances in search of water. We want to also use water from the taps.
Denis Ocakacon, a resident of Pangieth parish, says they share water with animals: We don't have clean and safe water in our area, and it poses a risk to our people.
Cissy Mandhawun, an elderly woman, says the new leaders should ensure that they get safe and clean water.
"Some of us are old and cannot have access to the far water points that we have inform of boreholes, please, leaders lobby for us clean and safe piped water," she said.
William Keruthum, an elderly in Alwi, said there is a need to construct better water points and piped water so that the women don't struggle for water even at odd hours.
Independent Pakwach District Woman Member of Parliament Sarah Bakiht said if elected, she will ensure that piped water is extended to all communities.
She mentioned that when elected, she will ensure that the water piped system is installed to curb the challenge of water scarcity in the area.
"When you reach the areas of Fualwonga and Pangieth, you find that there's never water, but if elected, i will ensure i lobby for the revision of Alwi dry corridor so that water reaches all the communities.
She also promised to give groups a minimum of Sh 500,000 to women and male groups to increase on their capital for their businesses.
"I will ensure that most of the women and male groups benefit from the funds because it can cause domestic violence".
She mentioned that when elected she will ensure that the water piped system is installed to curb the challenge of water scarcity in the area.
