The North Kyoga Regional Police said Tuesday that the campaigns for the Oyam North byelection ended peacefully without cases of violent confrontation.

Voters of Oyam North in the northern district of Oyam will go to the polls this Thursday to elect their new representative in Parliament.

Whoever will emerge winner in the July 6 polls will replace the late Charles Okello Engola, who died two months ago.

Engola, who was also the labour state minister, was shot dead by his bodyguard at his residence in Kyanja, Kampala on May 2.

His son, Samuel Engola Junior, is one of the four people in the race to succeed him in Parliament.

Engola Junior is vying for the seat on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket.

His challengers are Dr Eunice Apio Otuko of the Uganda People's congress (UPC), Freddy Newton Okello of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Daniel Okello of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

The two weeks of campaigns ended on Tuesday, two days before polling day.

The respective camps have done their part. Now their fate lies in the hands of the voters, who will descend on the 167 polling stations in Oyam North to choose their new MP.

“It has been so far so good from day one," Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson Jimmy Patrick Okema said of the campaigning period.

"We had quite a very peaceful process, with only one registered case of assault, where a journalist who was to moderate a talk show paid by the NRM team was allegedly assaulted," he added.

Last week, journalist Peter Oceng of Shine FM was allegedly assaulted by the chairperson of the Oyam Town Council Business Community, Stalon Olong.

Olong reportedly accused the journalist of playing a campaign song for UPC candidate Dr Otuko during their paid airtime.

In a statement on Tuesday, Okema said the case is being investigated by the Police in Oyam.

“As we come to the climax of the campaign today...we have not registered cases of violent campaign or confrontation,” added Police.
