The National Physical Planning Board (NPPB) has reminded business people that construction of filling stations in city centres was abolished.

The head of NPPB Amanda Ngabirano said the mushrooming petrol stations in Kampala and other cities city, with no room for escape during an accident, will not be allowed anymore.

“We are currently investigating how they get permits to operate in the city centres before tabling a motion for their demolition,” she said.

She warned those intending to invest in fuel stations not to focus on city centres, saying they will risk loss.

She made the remarks while addressing a stakeholders consultative meeting on physical planning matters in the country in Kampala.

Ngabirano also advised those in charge of physical planning of their respective cities to always consider creating leisure and recreational parks other than just building everywhere.

John Bahengana, the Town Clerk Masaka city, called for strict enforcement of physical planning laws and regulations in the new cities to ensure sustainable growth.

“We have road networks and designs, but we are taking over a huge area and people are rushing to build their houses which needs to be done where designs have been approved and infrastructure lay outs have been cleared, so that people don’t build in road reserves,” he said.
