Over 900 Lango residents start Namugongo trek

LIRA - A total of 986 pilgrims from the Lango region have today, May 16, 2025, left Lira City for trek to Namugongo to commemorate Martyrs Day on June 3, 2025.

Led by diocesan chancellor and Parish Priest of Lira Cathedral the Rev. Father Emmanuel Opio, the Christians set off from Uganda Martyrs Cathedral by 1:00am.

The team of pilgrims, comprising 11-year-old children, seven priests and 11 nuns, were flagged off by Lira Catholic Bishop Santus Lino Wanok after the holy Mass.

By press time, the pilgrims had already covered approximately 37km of their trek. They had a brief stopover at Baramindyang Primary School before proceeding to Corner Moulem in Aboke, Kole district, for breakfast.

Alfred Okello, the chairperson of the Lira Catholic diocese Foot Pilgrims, said they are trekking for two weeks and expect to arrive at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine by June 1.
