Parliament has directed the leader of Government business to invite the Internal Affairs Minister, Gen. Kahinda Otafiire to expound on reports about the planned relocation of Luzira Maximum Prisons to Buikwe district.
The complex in Kampala occupies 460 acres on Lake Victoria shores.
Speaker Anita Annet Among issued this directive while presiding over plenary on Wednesday, February 28.
Gaffa Mbwatekamwa, the Kasambya County Member of Parliament.
While deferring the matter to another day, Among said that it would be prudent to hear Otafiire’s side of the story. Her order was in regard to a matter of national importance that was raised by Gaffa Mbwatekamwa (Igara West, NRM).
Matter of national importance
Speaking on the floor of parliament on Wednesday, Mbwatekamwa riding on leaked correspondences wanted the matter urgently dissected to avert what to him appears to be another bubbling scandal.
Media (social and mainstream) has been awash with reports of a Chinese firm, Tian Tang Group wanting to acquire the Luzira land to set up a hotel.
Luzira maximum security prisons' facility was established by colonial authorities in 1924 and officially unveiled three years later. With a capacity of 1,700 inmates, the facility currently holds over 7,700 inmates (both female and male).
