Patrick Mecaka Ssaco, the Omoro acting district water officer, has revealed plans to decommission 426 boreholes that have remained non-functional for more than five years.
According to him, the boreholes have developed mechanical faults that are beyond rehabilitation.
Mecaka also revealed that Omoro district has 745 functional boreholes serving 171,255 people, and that water coverage in the district currently stands at 93.1 percent.
Despite the district’s wide water coverage, some areas are still grappling with shortages of clean water.
One of them is Aremo subcounty, where water coverage stands at 47 percent, according to the area chairperson, Kenneth Odyek.
Odyek, however, urged water source users’ committees at various water points within the sub-county to encourage residents to form savings groups.
He said members’ monthly contributions could be used as revolving funds to improve livelihoods while also supporting the maintenance of water points.
