NUP vets three aspirants for Oyam North by-election

The National Unity Platform party is vetting three aspirants who expressed interest to vie for the Oyam North by-election. 

The aspirants under vetting by top party members are Joe Nam, a former contestant for the seat, Samuel Odongo of Iceme Town Council, and Daniel Okello of Oyam Town Council. 

The aspirants reported to the party headquarters in Kamwokya, Kampala on Monday, June 6, where the process is being conducted. 

The seat fell vacant following the death of former State Minister of Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, Charles Okello Engola Macodwogo, on May 2, at the hands of his bodyguard, Wilson Sabiti. Sabiti later killed himself. 

The Electoral Commission has set June 19-20 for the nomination of candidates for the by-election scheduled for July 6. 

Aspirants Daniel Okello said they will welcome the party’s decision and rally behind one candidate to ensure that they take the seat. 

“I request my team to wait for the party position and hopefully this week they will decide and we shall respect the decision,” he said. 

Other parties 

The National Resistance Movement is yet to pick its candidate through primaries after 10 people picked nomination forms to battle for the party flag. 

Among them include Willy Omodo Omodo, former Ambassador Julius Peter Moto, Queen Dorothy Amolo, Augustine Obangakene, Alfred Okello Obaro, Samuel Engola Junior the son of the late Engola, Bille Otto, Geoffrey Bala, Henry Arinatwe Henry and Tonny Adonyo.    

The Uganda People's Congress has fronted Dr Eunice Apio who contested for the same previously as well as the Forum for Democratic Change that has picked Newton Odongo.
