NSSF KAVC International Volleyball tournament gets underway today at Lugogo

The 26th edition of NSSF KAVC International Volleyball tournament gets underway today at Lugogo until Sunday with 30 teams confirming participation.

18 women's teams and 12 men's teams from hosts Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan among others will be hosted at MTN Arena Lugogo and Hockey ground.

The championship which is under the theme of championing better community health and behaviour through sports was launched today at Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) offices, in Lugogo, where main sponsors NSSF injected sh45m in this year's competition.

NSSF Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs Barbra Arimi revealed that they are happy that competition has continued to nurture talent.

"This exposure in this tournament has allowed Ugandan teams to engage in top-level competition in the region, further enriching the skills of the local talent,” Arimi stated.

Out of the sh45m support towards the competition, NSSF committed a cash contribution of sh40m while sh5m is a kind contribution towards the successful organization of the games.

Last year, both the men's and women's competitions were won by Rwandan sides Police and APR respectively.

KAVC president Irene Kiconco called upon every sports lover to be at Lugogo for the three days.

“We call upon everyone who loves sports to come and enjoy the game of volleyball. This is going to be three days of action-packed entertainment. At the climax of the championship, our sponsors will also reveal top prizes such as prize money for the winners,” Kiconco

Kiconco also pointed out that this year’s edition will have corporate teams and secondary schools, expanding the tournament’s reach.

Sammy Laloyo, chairperson of the organising committee promised to have a successful competition.

Suzan Adrabo, the Sales and marketing executive at Fakhruddin Properties who are other sponsors of the competition, promised to stay.

“We are happy to support volleyball so that the sport continues to grow. Being part of his championship we also wanted to contribute to the nurturing of talent in the country and we are here to stay,” noted  Adrabo.

Juba VC and Lions VC from South Sudan, Burundian sides Regulars Uwezo, Rukinzo, Kenya’s Equity Bank, and Desert Warriors are some of the foreign teams that will be part of the championship. Uganda will be represented by both men's and women's teams such as KAVC-A, KAVC-B, Prisons, Ndejje University, Police, Prisons and Sky Volleyball Clubs, KCCA, COBAP, VVC, Espoir,  Elyon, UPDF, Kampala University.
