The National Resistance Movement (NRM) on Wednesday (January 27) won most Special Interest Group seats for Kabale district council.

The elections took place at Kabale Golf course on Makanga hill, Kabale municipality.

In the People with Disabilties (PWDs) male race, Herbert Katungi of NRM scooped 51 votes followed by Richard Mugabi an Independent candidate.

The female PWDs race saw Eunice Turyamuhaki an independent candidate win with 40 votes defeating NRM’s Ann Kobusingye who got 34 votes.

George Saturday from NRM won the Male workers race with 56 votes defeating, Innocent Abariho of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) who had 28 votes.

For the Workers female race, Betty Amatsiko of NRM won with 49 votes defeating Ruth Sunday Arineitwe an independent candidate who got 36 votes.

The elderly male will be represented by NRM’s Yosam Baguma while Byengoma Tumuhirwe from the same party will represent the elderly female.

She won with 66 votes.

Tumuhirwe defeated Jacinta Tinzarwa from FDC who had 3 votes.

In the youth category, NRM’s Ronald Bagamuhunda got 267 votes winning the male race defeating Edwin Amanya, an independent candidate who got 193 votes.

Shine Katumwehe of FDC came last with 04 votes.

The female youth will be represented by Hellen Natasha of NRM who got 323 votes defeating Spacious Byonanebye of FDC who had 115 votes.

Charity AKampwera an independent candidate trailed with 27 votes.

Earlier in the day, two candidates withdrew from the Kabale district workers' representative race.

The two included the incumbent Kabale district female councillor representing workers, Florence Musimenta, a Forum for Democratic Change Candidate (FDC) and George Alex Zigabire, an independent candidate, contesting for the district male workers’ councillor.

Musimenta who has been in the position since May 2018 was contesting with an Independent candidate, Ruth Sunday Arinaitwe and Betty Amasiko of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Similarly, Zigabire was facing the Incumbent Kabale district male district councillor representing workers, Innocent Abariho Katarabase a FDC candidate alongside their main rival George Saturday of NRM who is also the Kabale district male Youth Councillor.

It is alleged that Musimenta was paid sh100,000 and Zigabire received sh300,000 to pull out of the competition in favour of the Independent and FDC candidates respectively.

However, speaking to our reporter at Kabale district Golf course grounds in Makanga hill, Kabale municipality where the elections were taking place, Musimenta and Zigabire said that they decided to pull out of the race to form an alliance with the independent candidates so that they easily defeat their main rivals, NRM candidates.

Zigabire also added that he was not satisfied with the presented registers saying they included ghost voters.

The elections started with a low voter turn up with allegations of last minute campaigning in various secret venues.

Voters later increased beyond 1pm.
