Nnaabagereka tips women on good leadership and legacy

MPIGI — Nnaabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, the queen of Buganda kingdom, has rallied women in leadership to work hard and create a legacy which will benefit future generations.

Addressing hundreds of people who turned out to mark the Women's Day celebrations in Buganda held at Buwama subcounty headquarters in Mawokota county, Mpigi district, on Friday. Nnaabagereka also encouraged Women in business to embrace new trends in technology.

"I encourage all women, especially in leadership positions, to always be down to earth, create legacy, care for the people in communities they live in, and always work towards creating a positive legacy for the future generations to follow", the Nnaabagereka told hundreds at the events.

The queen also emphasised the need for people to adopt best health practices like making regular visits to health centres for checkups and also exercises to prevent diseases resulting from poor health lifestyles. 

"It is important to take good care of your bodies and also adopt good lifestyle practices like regular checkups in the health centres and regular body exercise, these help to keep your bodies healthy and also fight diseases", she emphasised.

She also advocated for unity among women if they are to achieve stable growth and development, and also advised them to engage in productive activities that are aimed not only at bettering their livelihoods but also at benefiting communities.

For role models, she called for formal recognition of different women who have excelled in serving the kingdom.

Buganda minister for Gender and Social Development, thanked the Queen for steering the empowerment of Women in Buganda through creating different initiatives and funds towards uplifting the standards of women.

"We would like to thank you for your tireless efforts towards empowering women and the girl child. It should be understood that the Nnaabagereka Development Trust was created to mainly advocate for the rights and plight of the girl child and women," she said.

The main celebrations featured an exhibition with stalls displaying agricultural products and items from different women's groups from several Buganda Counties.

While in Mawokota, Nnaabagereka visited two homes where she toured different projects.

The owners of these homes, Makerere University Don, Prof. Fredrick Masagazi Masaazi of Mbizinya village, and Vincent Ssemanda of Katikanyonyi village, at different engagements, briefed Nnaabagereka about their activities aimed at uplifting the standard of their families and the neighbourhood. 

Mawokota County Chief, Hadji Hassan Kagga, also appreciated the Nnaabagereka for tireless efforts to empower Women and girls in Buganda to fight for their rights and freedom and also advocating for the education of the girl child. 

Mpigi district Woman Member of Parliament, Teddy Nambooze, also applauded Nnaabagereka's interventions to support the women and girls in Buganda and her different initiatives and interventions to empower women.

Engineer Joseph Mukasa Saava, the special president's envoy in charge of the Buganda region, who represented the State House controller, Jane Barekye, and who also conveyed her message, thanked the Nnaabagereka for advocating for social and economic development of girls and women and also championing the fight against HIV/AIDS and Malnutrition among children. 

"We thank you for all the programs towards fighting for the rights of the girls and also fighting against HIV/AIDS in the Buganda region, we pledge to continue supporting all your programs geared towards empowering women and also fighting diseases and ignorance, the President is informed of these interventions and is in full support of the development programs from your office," Part of the message from Jane Barekye, the state house controller read.

This year’s Buganda Women’s Day celebration was held under the theme, ‘Empowering Women to Lead Change in Business, Health and Environmental Sustainability.'
