NGO chief Sarah Bireete charged at Buganda Road Court

Bireete, who was arrested on December 30, 2025, has been arraigned before Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko, charged with disclosing personal data contrary to section 35 (1) and (2) of the Data Protection and Privacy Act Capt 97.

Centre for Constitutional Governance executive director Sarah Bireete has today, January 2, 2026, been charged before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Buganda Road in Kampala city.

 



Bireete, who was arrested on December 30, 2025, has been arraigned before Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko, charged with disclosing personal data contrary to section 35 (1) and (2) of the Data Protection and Privacy Act Capt 97.

 



However, the defense lawyers, led by Jude Byamukama, requested the court to allow them to file Bireete's bail application in the system, which prompted Jatiko to adjourn for 30 minutes.

 



A group of activists, including Goodber Tumushabe, Uganda Law Society deputy president Anthony Asiimwe, NUP Secretary General Louis Rubongoya are in court.
