Dr Sarah Bireete, the director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance, who was arrested on Tuesday this week, has been produced before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Buganda Road, where she is expected to be charged today with cyber-related offences.
On Tuesday, police confirmed they had arrested Bireete, but did not provide details.
She posted on social media claiming her home in Kiwango-Namwezi, in Mukono Municipality, had been surrounded by the army and police.
"My house is under siege by the Police and army, " Bireete said before her arrest.
Sources said the outspoken NGO boss was arrested over a series of controversial remarks about the Government, both on social media and her media appearances.
Her legal team, led by Ronald Mafabi, said they had not been served with a charge sheet, but based on various interactions with Police officers, she is believed to be accused of cyber-related offences.
Bireete's arrest has since drawn condemnation from several human rights groups both within and outside the country.
