REFUGEE STORIES OF HOPE

KAMPALA - New Vision is to publish a series highlighting the plight of refugees in Uganda, shining a spotlight on their resilience, challenges and hopes.

The series starting tomorrow (Tuesday, June 18, 2024) aimed at humanising the statistics and bringing forward the personal narratives behind the refugee crisis that has touched millions of lives in the country.

Each piece will provide a platform for refugees to share their journeys, aspirations and the obstacles they face in their quest for safety and stability.

From the heart-wrenching experiences of displacement to the inspiring tales of rebuilding and integration, the series offers a multifaceted view of refugee life.

The series will cover a wide range of topics,  including journeys of escape,  and detailed accounts of refugees fleeing conflict and persecution, highlighting the perilous paths they undertake for survival.

Others about life in transition, temporary shelters, shedding light on the living conditions, daily struggles and the sense of community among displaced persons.

The stories will also explain issues of integration and identity and how refugees have managed to integrate into host communities, focusing on their contributions, cultural exchanges and the ongoing challenges of preserving their identities.

The series has also paid attention to health, water scarcity, youth and employment, education and the unique experiences of women and children, who often face additional layers of vulnerability.

Why this series matters

John Eremu, the New Vision editor, said the refugee crisis is not just a distant humanitarian issue but a reality greatly impacting the host communities and Uganda’s economy in general.  “By presenting the human faces behind the headlines, we hope to inspire more inclusive attitudes and actions towards refugees,” Eremu said.

“As we embark on this storytelling journey, we invite our readers, local organisations and international bodies to engage with and support this series. Your feedback and support can amplify the voices of the refugees and contribute to a more informed and compassionate discourse,” he added.

Eremu expressed gratitude to the World Association of News Publishers and Women in News for their support in developing the series through the social impact reporting initiatives grant under the gender equality, diversity and inclusion project.
