The Senior Four (S4) mock examinations, set by experts working with New Vision, will
kick off today.
The exams are based on the abridged curriculum, which the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) will also use to set the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.
Under the abridged curriculum, some repeated topics were scrapped, others
merged and teachers were required to focus on selected critical topics per subject.
The curriculum was designed by the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC)
to make up for the time students lost during the twoyear lockdown precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The New Vision mock exams will run for two weeks, focusing on the main topics as captured in the abridged curriculum.
According to the timetable, the mock examinations will start with maths and physics.
English language and Literature in English will be set for Tuesday, followed by maths
solutions on Wednesday.
It will be followed by New Vision S4 mock exams start today chemistry exams and more
maths solutions on Thursday, biology exams and physics solutions on Friday and end with the geography exam and more physics solutions on Saturday.
Bruce Byaruhanga, the New Vision circulation manager, explained that setting the
mock exams was part of the newspaper’s initiatives to give back to the readers.
He added that it was intended to prepare learners ahead of the national examinations,
which start in October.
“Our children lost about two years due to the pandemic. As a company, we developed reading materials which many have been reading throughout the period. As approved
publishers by the NCDC, we have also introduced mock exams for S4 candidates,” the
New Vision circulation manager said. Byaruhanga added that the questions have been preparedby some of the best teachers in their respective fields.“UNEB has released the timetable and we thought this is the best time to engage these
candidates. We encourage parents to buy the newspapers so as to get a free insert of the
examinations,” he said. According to UNEB, a total of 349,455 candidates are expected
to write UCE examinations this year, starting from October 17 to November 18, 2022.
NOT THE USUAL MOCKS
Andrew Nsereko, a chemistry teacher and one of the examiners, said the questions
prepared for the candidates will test the learners’ ability to apply what they have learnt in school. “These are not the usual mocks. In chemistry, we want to engage candidates on how to apply the skills attained in
school. The questions have been tailored to ensure that a student
can explain the processes,” he said. Another of the examiners, Tom Kibirango, a geography teacher, emphasised that the questions will test skill.
