On Friday, May 17, 2024, President Yoweri Museveni appointed Byakagaba as Police chief, succeeding Martins Okoth Ochola, who retired early this year.

Parliament's appointments committee is today, May 23, 2024, scheduled to vet newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba and his deputy, James Ocaya New Vision Online has learnt. The House committee is chaired by Speaker Anita Among. 

On Friday, May 17, 2024, President Yoweri Museveni appointed Byakagaba as Police chief, succeeding Martins Okoth Ochola, who retired early this year.

Ocaya replaces Maj. Gen. Tumusiime Katsigazi, who is set for redeployment in the army.

Following the vetting and potential confirmation, Byakagaba and Ocaya are expected to preside over handover ceremonies for other officers assuming positions of Assistant IGP. 

Among the new appointees, include Frank Mwesigwa, who will lead the Police Directorate of Operations; Charles Kataratambi, heading the Legal Directorate; Fadhil Kaali in charge of fire and rescue; and Hadija Namutebi overseeing research and planning.
