New Bible House receives Dr Mukhama

Dr Simon Peter Mukhama, the former General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Bible Society of Uganda who died last Friday (May 12, 2023) worked hard to put up the new Bible House at the organization’s premises on Bombo Road in Kampala.

It is to his wisdom, faith and fundraising acumen that the project’s swift progress and success are attributed. It is unfortunate that by the time of his demise, the building was not yet open for use.

In any case, the Board of Governors of the Bible Society fully acknowledges Dr Mukhama as the principal champion of the project.

And as a gesture of recognizing and appreciating his invaluable contribution, they took his body to the new building, where it lay in state for about two hours. 

The funeral prayer and tribute function took place on Saturday (May 13, 2023). It was graced by the organisation’s Board members, staff and friends.

Delivering his homily during the function, the Assistant Bishop of the Diocese of Kampala (Anglican), the Rt. Rev. Hannington Mutebi spoke highly of Mukhama describing him as a great servant of God, who did great things for the Bible Society.

“Dr Mukhama was small in stature but in him was a great man, a giant of God. He was committed to serving God’s purposes. He bonded and worked well with foreign Bible societies to advance the work of the Bible,” said Bishop Mutebi.

The representative of Fencon Consulting Engineers Limited, the Rev. Gabriel Fataki referred to Dr, Mukhama as a “General of the Church.”

“Dr Mukhama single-handedly fundraised resources for putting up the new Bible House. 

He was the face of the Bible Society which he served selfishly and to the best of his abilities,” said Fataki.

Andrew Mukiibi, a co-Director at Canaan Construction Company also expressed deep admiration of Mukhama’s clean heart, leadership qualities and commitment to the work of Bible Society.

The head of the National Task Force of the New Bible House, Dorothy Kisaka (the ED of KCCA) spoke highly of Dr. Mukhama’s leadership and interpersonal charism.

“He was a great leader of magnificent attributes. He embraced everybody who came to him. He had that way of making you feel special even if you considered yourself insignificant. He made everybody feel comfortable,” Kisaka said.

The Chairman of the Board of the Bible Society, Fr. Dr. Mark Richard Ssajjabbi referred o Mukhama as a symbol of the Bible Society. 

He later lauded him for his deep faith, generosity and enthusiasm for the Bible apostolate.

The President of the Bible Society, Justice Mike Chibita said Dr. Mukhama had emptied himself for the Gospel. 

Quoting the Bahamian evangelist Myles Monroe, Chibita said Mukhama was indeed a great man because he had done things whose benefits he will not see.
