Older persons in Wakiso district's Nansana municipality want the Government to revise the age of accessing funds under the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) programme.
SAGE is part of the Social Protection Programme (ESP) implemented by the Government under the gender ministry. Currently, shillings 25,000 is given to those who have attained the age of 80 years and above.
However, during the belated celebration of Older Persons' Day at Busukuuma division headquarters on May 9, 2025, the councillor representing older persons at Busukuuma division, Asaf Serunyiggo, commended the Government for the initiative, but requested that it revises the age of beneficiaries downwards.
"Many older persons are vulnerable and need more support from the Government," he said.
They also want the cash to be increased, considering the inflation, to ensure that older persons improve their livelihood.
The function was graced by Nansana municipality Resident District Commissioner Charles Lwanga, who asked the gathering to vote for President Yoweri Museveni come the 2026 general election. This is because, according to him, Museveni cares for the elderly and has guaranteed peace and security.
He introduced the National Resistance Movement party flag-bearers for Nansana municipality, Hamid Nsubuga, who expects to contest against incumbent Nansana mayor Regina Bakitte.
The elderly later danced to NRM tunes in support of President Museveni.
