Police in Namayingo district say an Electoral Commission officer has died after being involved in a road crash on Christmas Day.
Busoga east Police region spokesperson Micheal Kasadha said the Police have started investigations to establish the cause of the crash.
Kasadha told New Vision Online the incident happened at about 10:40 am at Walumbe cell, Nambugu ward in Namayingo town council, on the Namayingo-Musita road.
He added that the crash involved motor vehicle registration number UBA 289H Toyota Hiace, Toyota Harrier Registration number UA 129CE and an unknown motorcycle. All drivers and riders, whose identities are unknown, are on the run.
Kasadha identified the deceased as Nicholas Ochieng, 38, a resident of Mpano B cell, Bulamba ward in Namayingo town council.
According to preliminary investigations, the motorcycle was moving from Namayingo town heading to Mayuge side, whereas the driver of the Toyota Hiace was travelling from the Opposite direction.
“There was a Toyota Harrier, which was joining the road on the side where the motorcycle was at a high speed. The motorcycle which avoided collision with the Toyota Harrier, lost control and ended up in the right-hand lane, before colliding with the Toyota Hiace. Ochieng, who was the passenger on the motorcycle, got a compound fracture and was rushed to Shalom Medical Centre, where he was later pronounced dead,” Kasadha said.
The scene was visited and documented by traffic officers and both vehicles were towed and parked at the Police station pending inspection, while the motorcycle is not yet recovered.
He said efforts to have the rider and the drivers apprehended are underway, as he attributed the cause of the accident to recklessness by the motorcycle rider.
Suspected motorcycle thieves killed
In another development, the Police in Iganga district have started investigations into the murder of two suspected motorcycle thieves by mob action.
The incident occurred at Namunkesu Lc1 Village, Namungalwe sub-county in Iganga district.
Kasadha said, according to initial findings, on Christmas Day, the deceased persons allegedly stole a motorcycle Reg.No UGC 169 V from Mayuge and tampered with its tracking device installed by the loan company.
However, the said motorcycle had an additional tracking device that the owner used to track the motorcycle which was moving towards Iganga. Together with fellow bodaboda riders, they followed, intercepted the two suspects along Nakalama-Namungalwe road.
The bodaboda riders were joined by locals to hack and burn the suspected thieves after attempts to disappear in the sugarcane plantation failed.
A case file of murder by mob was registered, while the district Police commander dispatched a team of officers to the crime scene.
The bodies were retrieved and taken to Iganga main hospital mortuary for postmortem, while the motorcycle was recovered and exhibited.
