Muslims called to watch out for the moon on Friday

Sheikh Imran Abdunoor Ssali the UMSC Imam alerted the Muslim community to prepare for the Holy Month of Ramadhan.

The Acting Director of Sharia Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa has called upon Muslim communities in Uganda to watch out for the crescent on the evening of Friday, April 1, 2022, because this will be the 29th day that ends, the month  Shaban 1443 AH according to the Islamic calendar. 

‘’Should the crescent appear in the evening of April 1, 2022, Ramadhan will commence on Saturday, April 2, 2022, and failure to sight the crescent on April 1, 2022, will mean that Ramadhan will automatically begin on Sunday, April 3, 2022,’’ said Waiswa

Mpanso, the Registrar Directorate of Sharia, Sheikh Imran Abdunoor Ssali the UMSC Imam was speaking during the press conference aimed at alerting the Muslim community to prepare for the Holy Month of Ramadhan.

According to Waiswa, Allah says in Quran ‘’ O believers fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become pious and the one who fasts the month of Ramadhan in accordance to his belief and assuming Allah’s reward, he, or she will be pardoned his or her previous sins’’ (Surat Bukhar and Muslim)

He called upon whoever sights the crescent or is in possession of reliable information on the above issues being requested to communicate with UMSC officials, on mobile numbers

He wished all Muslims a happy and successful fasting season during Holy Month and called them to fast in accordance with Islamic Law or Sharia

Ramadhan as Holy Month

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer, reflection and community. It is this month of Ramadan, that the holy book of the Quran was revealed to the prophet Muhammad.

Fasting during Ramadan is also one of the five pillars of Islam and it’s believed that during this month the gates to heaven are open and the doors to hell are closed therefore Muslim  use the holy month of Ramadhan to focus on their connection to God, reflect on their lives, and spend quality time with friends and family.
