President Yoweri Museveni is set to meet Archbishop Emeritus of Gulu Archdiocese, His Grace Dr. John Baptist Odama on the progress of the Acholi Bur cassava commercialization project.
Gulu Archdiocese piloted the Acholibur cassava project in Pader District in partnership with the agriculture ministry to eradicate poverty in the Acholi sub-region and increase household income.
The President committed on Thursday, August 29, 2024, during the official opening of the Regional Parliament Sitting in Gulu City. The sitting began on August 28 and will continue until August 30th at Kaunda Grounds.
According to Museveni, cassava growth and production should be widely promoted in Northern and TESO sub-regions, adding that “The production of cassava in very big in the Northern region but the problem has been how it should be processed.”
On January 19, 2019, Museveni pledged to build a starch factory in Pader to support the commercialization of cassava growing in northern Uganda.
Uganda Development Corporation (UDC) received a land donation from a good Samaritan in Pader for the establishment of a factory in Acholibur Town Council, Pader, however, to date, the factory is not functional.
Rev Fr Mathew Okun Lagoro, the project manager of cassava commercialization told the president that almost everything has been done except a few issues that need to be discussed with the President before they can continue.
