President Yoweri Museveni will address the nation on Saturday, January 25, 2024, ahead of the 39th National Liberation Day (NRM) anniversary, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

A statement released on January 24, 2025, by the Presidential Press Unit (PPU), announced that Museveni will address the nation on Saturday at 8:00 pm, ahead of the 39th NRM/A Liberation Day Anniversary celebrations scheduled for Sunday in Mubende district, at National Teachers College Grounds.

The address will be broadcast live on all radios, TV stations and online platforms.

This year’s Liberation Day celebration marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s history, honouring the NRM’s victory and the progress made over nearly four decades of leadership.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is: 39 years of NRM/A: Salutations to those who re-sanctified our homeland.

Addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre on January 22, 2025, Minister for the Presidency Milly Babirye Babalanda, announced that Museveni will award 61 medals to distinguished public servants who excelled during the preparations of the Non-Aligned Movement and G77+China summits held in Kampala in January 2024.

According to Babalanda, the two summits earned Uganda global recognition due to the country's meticulous approach to organising the events. The medals will be presented during the 39th NRM/NRA Victory Day Anniversary celebrations.

Why celebrate NRM anniversary

According to Babalanda, Ugandans celebrate Liberation Day to commemorate the circumstances that inspired them to liberate the country, marking the beginning of Uganda’s journey toward building a nation that reflects their identity.

“On this day, we pause to acknowledge and appreciate all Ugandans who have sacrificed in various ways for a better country. We recognize their tenacity and commitment to nation-building,” she said.

The Minister noted that Uganda now boasts a system of laws and institutions that ensures justice for all, fostering an environment where Ugandans can confidently pursue their potential without hindrance.

She said by investing heavily in socio-economic development, the NRM has encouraged a mindset shift away from dependency and towards self-sufficiency, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

Babalanda highlighted that over the past 39 years, Uganda has witnessed significant socio-economic transformation, guided by the NRM’s philosophy, ideology, and strategy.  She said the transformation has enabled the country to recover from a colonial enclave economy and make notable progress in various sectors.
