The Ugandan government has named 57 suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists who were killed in an air attack in eastern DR Congo on September 16, 2023.

President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the commander-in-chief of Uganda's armed forces, released the list of names on X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday.

They include Bashir Kabuye and Ismail Mutagubya, who were the overall commander and second in command, respectively.

“About 200 of them died. Since that time, other attacks have been carried out,” the President said in his statement to fellow Ugandans and, especially the Bazzukulu (grandchildren).

He, however, said: “We do not know whether these are their real names. Those are, however, the names they are known by in their terrorist circles.”

Museveni noted that they have been carrying out air attacks on the terrorists in DR Congo and that they normally identify those targets by both technical and human intelligence.

“Using those means, you can know that many terrorists were killed. However, you will not know who, until human sources bring in their reports,” he said.

His statement came a few hours after reports emerged that two ADF terrorists had been killed and their commander injured during a fight with soldiers from the UPDF and Special Forces Command in Kibale Forest National Park.

Their commander was only identified as Kamusi.

ADF rebels are affiliated with the Islamic State, a radical Sunni military group which claimed responsibility for the twin bombings in central Kampala on November 16, 2021, which left seven people dead and over 36 injured.

Following these bomb attacks, a joint operation for the eradication of ADF and the Islamic State Central Africa Province was launched on November 30, 2021, by the Special Forces of the Armed Forces of DR Congo supported by UPDF’s Special Forces Units.
