President Yoweri Museveni on Tuesday held talks with visiting German MPs and entrepreneurs at State House, Entebbe.
According to Museveni, the meeting rotated around tapping into the business opportunities that Africa and Germany share.
The Germany delegation, which jetted into the country on Monday, is led by the head of the State Chancellery, Oliver Schenk.
“I met a delegation from Germany led by Minister of State and Head of the State Chancellery, Mr Oliver Schenk. We discussed possible business opportunities. I am glad to see groups like this coming to Africa where there is a lot of business potential,” Museveni said in a tweet.
“Africa has a lot of natural resources with big business opportunities that need to be utilised. We can for instance make medicine from plants and this would be a good area of cooperation. We have medicines like Covidex, it is from our plants here and doing well,” he added.
Covidex is a herbal extract from Ugandan indigenous plants, which Prof. Patrick Ogwang, the lead researcher on the medicine, says 100% cures Coronavirus.
According to the Deputy Press Secretary, Faruk Kirunda, during the meeting, the President asked the German entrepreneurs to “consider investing in plant medicine and banana processing”, noting that the East African Community (EAC) market is available.
On Monday, the German delegation also met the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Diana Atwine, at the ministry’s headquarters in Kampala.
“Yesterday (Monday) we met with a delegation of MPs from the Chancery of Saxony - Germany, led by the State Minister of Saxony, Hon. Oliver Schenk. They were accompanied by the Ambassador of Germany to Uganda, H.E Matthias Schauer. We discussed collaboration between our Governments in health,” Atwine said.
“The delegation pledged to partner with the Government of Uganda in undertaking research in the areas of antimicrobial resistance [and] traditional medicine development. The projects are currently being implemented in Lugazi, Buikwe district, Mbarara University of Science and Technology [and] Kiruddu Hospital,” she added.
