President Yoweri Museveni and His Highness Rahim Aga Khan V, Thursday, September 11, 2025, inaugurated Aga Khan University at Nakawa in Kampala and broke ground for the construction of the Aga Khan Hospital.



The ceremony marked a milestone in the long-standing partnership between Uganda and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), which has invested in health, education, business, and cultural initiatives across the country.



The ceremony also featured a special moment as President Museveni conferred upon His Highness the Aga Khan the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa (Grand Master), Uganda’s highest civilian honour, in recognition of his outstanding service to the nation and leadership in advancing social and economic development.

Princess Zahra Aga Khan was also decorated with the Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa (Grand Commander) for her long-standing contributions to health, education, and women’s empowerment.



His Highness arrived in Uganda on Wednesday and was welcomed at Entebbe International Airport by Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng. He was later received at State House, Entebbe, by Museveni, the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni.

During their meeting, President Museveni commended the Aga Khan for his commitment to private sector-led development and reiterated his government’s readiness to foster an environment that supports investment and innovation.




The Aga Khan, who is on a two-day official visit, is also scheduled to meet with the Ismaili community in Uganda.

The Aga Khan Development Network has a strong presence in Uganda, with investments in education, health services, finance, media, hospitality, energy, and infrastructure. Its institutions include Aga Khan Health Services, Aga Khan Foundation, Aga Khan Schools, Aga Khan University, Serena Hotels, Diamond Trust Bank, National Media Group, Jubilee Insurance, Kampala Pharmaceuticals, Bujagali Power Limited, and the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat.

Guests started arriving for the event as early as 8:00 am, filling the venue with a sense of excitement and anticipation.

The grounds of the new Aga Khan University campus in Nakawa were beautifully set for the occasion, with dignitaries, government officials, members of the Ismaili community, students, and invited guests gathering to witness the historic inauguration.
