The secretary general of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Richard Twodong, has said that there is no cause for alarm in the party following the rebranding of the MK movement to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU).

Last Wednesday,  in Kampala, the MK movement headed by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the senior Presidential advisor on Special Operations rebranded to Patriotic League of Uganda in a function that was presided over by the vice chairperson of the NRM Eastern region Capt. Mike Mukula.

Five ministers, over 150 Members of Parliament, and close to 90 LC5s in the country, mainly those in the NRM attended the rebranding function which has raised eyebrows on whether they are abandoning their party.

But Twodong has stated that he was also invited to attend that function but couldn't make it, saying he was happy with those who attended it because it was not a crime as party members.

He described PLU as part of the teams mobilizing for the NRM party whose chairman is ready to face off with opposition candidates for the presidency come 2026.

“For all the other groups within the NRM who are mobilizing; the MK movement, office of the national chairman, volunteer groups, all those are tributaries that collect water to the man river which is NRM,” Twodong said.

“As Pan Africanists, we have one struggle but many fronts, so all of them are members of the NRM,” Twodong explained to a crowd of the NRM supporters of Serere district on Friday where he was a chief guest during the belated NRM day celebrations.

Hosted by Hellen Adoa the minister of state for fisheries, Todwong noted that the NRM members were free to associate with PLU because they are not a registered political party that will oppose them.

Adoa the minister of state for fisheries ousted Alice Alaso as district woman MP who was then the secretary general of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and now in the new party Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) as its coordinator.

For a decade now, Serere which was painted blue has turned yellow with three MPs being in the NRM and majority district councilors and LC3s.

Once a stronghold of the opposition district in the Teso sub-region, the NRM party can now smile in Serere after winning the people to their side.

Turning on opposition leaders, Twodong urged the people Once a stronghold of the opposition district in the Teso sub-region, the NRM party can now smile in Serere after winning the people to their side of Teso to shun them because they do not want to work with President Museveni.
