The Orthodox Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and all Africa, His Divine Beatitude Theodore II has appointed Archbishop Jeronymos Muzeeyi as the Exarch of Uganda.

In the Orthodox Church, an exarch simply means the deputy of a Patriarch.

This implies that Muzeeyi, who is currently the Metropolitan of the Holy Metropolis of Kampala and all of Western Uganda, is going to act as the overseer of the Orthodox Church in Uganda and will be serving in this capacity on behalf of Patriarch Theodore who is shepherding Africa from Alexandria in Egypt.

This was revealed by Archbishop Muzeeyi himself during the farewell function of Bishop Constantine Mbonabingi at Namungoona Orthodox Community Centre (in Rubaga Division) on April 8 (2024).

Speaking during the same function, Bishop Silvestros Kisitu of Jinja and all of Eastern Uganda said that Muzeeyi’s elevation to the status of Exarch of Uganda is proof of the steady growth of the Orthodox Church.

He revealed that very soon the Orthodox Bishops in Uganda will be forming an episcopal council (similar to the Uganda Episcopal Conference of the Catholic Church, or the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church), which will help them to have a joint holistic evangelistic strategy.

The Uganda Orthodox Church currently has three dioceses including the Holy Metropolis of Kampala and all Western Uganda (led by Metropolitan Jeronymos Muzeeyi), the diocese of Gulu and all Northern Uganda led by Bishop Nektarios Kabuye and the diocese of Jinja and all Eastern Uganda led by Bishop Jeronymos Muzeeyi.
