The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has called on the public to remain calm and avoid speculation following the sudden death of Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament Hellen Nakimuli, as questions continue to surround the circumstances of her passing.

In a statement released by its president, Dr Frank R. Asiimwe, the association expressed shock and deep sorrow at the loss of the legislator, who died at Alexandria Medical Centre on April 19, 2026, describing her death as untimely.

“On behalf of the Uganda Medical Association, we extend our deepest condolences to her family, the people of Kalangala, and the Parliament of Uganda. It is a sombre reality of medical science that even under the most diligent care, the risk of mortality can never be completely eliminated,” Dr Asiimwe said.

Nakimuli’s death has sparked concern and public debate, with many Ugandans seeking answers. However, the medical body cautioned against rushing to conclusions, urging patience as investigations continue.

“We urge the public to allow any ongoing investigations to proceed without speculation,” the statement read, emphasising that establishing the truth requires a transparent and scientifically grounded process.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to professional ethics and patient safety, noting that while medical practitioners adhere to strict clinical protocols, outcomes are not always guaranteed.

UMA also expressed solidarity with healthcare workers, acknowledging the emotional toll of losing patients despite best efforts.

“We stand with the many doctors who wake up every day to save lives. Losing a life despite your effort should never discourage your resolve to treat the next one,” he added.

To ensure accountability and maintain public trust, the association pledged to support any formal inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Nakimuli’s death. It said it is ready to provide technical and expert guidance to help determine whether proper standards of care were followed.

The call for restraint comes amid growing public interest in the case, with leaders and citizens alike demanding clarity. UMA stressed that fairness to all parties involved depends on allowing due process to take its course.

Nakimuli’s passing has left a void in both her constituency and the national political landscape, with tributes continuing to pour in from across the country.

As investigations proceed, the medical association said its priority remains clear: uncovering the facts, upholding professional integrity and strengthening confidence in Uganda’s healthcare system.

Speaking to the media, Leader of Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi said pathologists were yet to reach a conclusive finding despite carrying out the examination on the late legislator’s body.

“Even after the postmortem, doctors have not yet established the exact cause of death,” Ssenyonyi said.

He added that additional medical investigations are underway to help determine what may have led to her sudden death.

“More tests are being done, including toxicology, to help ascertain what could have led to her passing,” Ssenyonyi, who also speaks for the National Unity Platform party, explained.
