Masaka rural communities boosted with safe water initiative

“We’re thrilled the Government has prioritised Kyanamukaka with this clean water programme. With more people moving here, access to safe water is vital. We thank President Museveni and NRM for this support,” Nakidde said.

MASAKA - Hundreds of families in Kyanamukaka, Buwunga and Kyesiga sub-counties in Masaka district now have access to clean water, thanks to a government-led initiative launched to address chronic shortages in the region.

The programme, championed by former Vice-President Edward Ssekandi, was unveiled in Bulegeya village, Ssekandi’s ancestral home, on October 19, 2025, marking the beginning of improved health, agriculture and livelihoods in Masaka’s rural areas.

The intervention comes amid rising population pressures and drought challenges, according to Zainah Nakidde, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party chairperson for the area.

“We’re thrilled the Government has prioritised Kyanamukaka with this clean water programme. With more people moving here, access to safe water is vital. We thank President Museveni and NRM for this support,” she said.

Nakidde highlighted how water scarcity had hindered farming and small-scale irrigation projects: Now, farmers can use this water to boost crop yields and increase household incomes.

Reduced expenses

Allan Ssekamatte, a resident of Kyanamukaka town council, said a jerrycan of clean water previously cost between shillings 500 and 1,000.

“This programme will reduce those expenses and improve health outcomes,” he said.
Oscar Mutebi, an aide to Ssekandi, emphasised the programme’s broader reach: Clean water will also be extended to Police stations, prisons, health centres and local governments. We urge communities to protect these resources for health and agricultural benefits.

The initiative is expected to also support the construction of Masaka district’s new headquarters in Kyambazi, a 10-acre plot donated by Ssekandi during his tenure as Bukoto Central MP. The site, recently approved by the government, underscores the program’s alignment with President Museveni’s vision to transform rural areas.

Abdu Ssebagala and Shareed Muliika of the water ministry said the programme’s expansion aligns with President Yoweri Museveni’s manifesto.

“This is about empowering communities through sustainable water access,” Ssebagala said.

As the project rolls out, local leaders hope it will catalyse economic growth, reduce waterborne diseases, and position Masaka as a model for rural development.
