IBANDA | MoJCA | ANTI-CORRUPTION | MAO
The Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, was expected to officiate at celebrations to mark International Anti-Corruption Day, in Ibanda Municipality on Friday.
“I am in Ibanda Municipality representing President Kaguta Museveni as a guest of honor at the commemoration of Anti-Corruption Day. Since the corrupt birds have learned to fly without perching, the anti-corruption forces must learn to shoot without missing,” he tweeted the same day.
The theme of this year's Anti-Corruption Day is "Citizens must own the war to eliminate corruption—it is their war."
The day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003, as a global observance to promote awareness about corruption, its dangers, and how to prevent and combat it.
Since then, the anti-corruption agencies in Uganda, together with their stakeholders, commemorate the day annually.
This, according to the Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity, Rose Lilly Akello, is done through a series of activities to increase public awareness about the evils of corruption and to promote public participation in the fight against corruption.
According to the Inspectorate of Government spokesperson, Ali Munira, the inspectorate in FY2021/22, investigated 26 high-profile cases and recovered sh30b, of which sh9b was from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, sh1b from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, and the rest of the money from ministries, departments, and agencies.
The IG also prosecuted 86 cases and secured 34 convictions, causing the interdiction of a total of 45 public officers including the Chairperson of the Uganda Land Commission, Beatrice Byenkya Nyakaisiki.
The IG is currently investigating cases valued at about sh500b, some of which led to the halting of numerous suspicious procurements and activities that would have led to the loss of public funds.
In addition, the IG stepped up engagements with the public as a way of mobilizing them to join the war against corruption. These include all district chairpersons, Kampala Capital City Authority councilors, speakers, and the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda.
