Police in Rubirizi District have launched investigations into the suspected murder of a 50-year-old man following a violent dispute over meat sharing during Eid al-Adha celebrations.
The deceased, identified as Joachim Tumwebaze, a resident of Mubanda D Village in Ryeru sub-county, was allegedly stabbed to death on the night of May 28, 2026.
According to preliminary police findings, the tragic incident occurred at around 9:00 pm after Tumwebaze reportedly became involved in a serious disagreement with another man during the sharing of meat as families and communities celebrated Eid al-Adha, the Muslim feast marked by animal slaughter and communal sharing of meat.
Witnesses said the disagreement quickly escalated into violence, leading to the fatal stabbing. The suspect allegedly fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Tumwebaze was rushed to Rubirizi Medical Centre for emergency medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The Greater Bushenyi Police spokesperson, Apollo Tayebwa, confirmed the incident and said investigations into the matter had commenced.
“We condemn acts of violence and lawlessness in our communities, especially during celebrations meant to promote unity, love, and sharing. We appeal to anyone with information regarding the suspect’s whereabouts to cooperate with police so that the perpetrator is brought to justice,” Tayebwa said.
Police said the deceased’s body was conveyed to Rugazi Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination.
Tayebwa extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid acts of violence during social and religious celebrations.
Eid al-Adha is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah before God provided a lamb as a substitute sacrifice.
The celebration is observed through special prayers, slaughtering of animals such as goats, sheep, and cows, and sharing meat with family members, neighbours, and the less privileged in the spirit of charity, unity, and compassion.
