A bitter political rivalry within a family has erupted into violence in West Nile region's Madi-Okollo district.
Sunday Bulia allegedly shot his brother, Patrick Asia, with an arrow during an argument over support for competing candidates in the Lower Madi parliamentary race. The incident, under investigation by the Police reflects the growing political tension ahead of the 2026 General Election.
On January 4, 2026, at about 6:30pm, the brothers clashed in Lali Cell, Enyio Ward, after debating support for Isael Ali Ogama (National Resistance Movement flag-bearer) and Ronald Afidra (independent and the incumbent).
Police say the dispute turned physical when Bulia grabbed a bow and arrow, intending to attack their father. Asia intervened to stop him, but Bulia fired the arrow, striking him near his genital area.
Asia, a staunch supporter of Afidra, was wearing a yellow T-shirt emblazoned with his candidate’s photo during the confrontation. However, Bulia, backing Ogama, fled after the attack as Asia was rushed to Rhino Camp Health Centre IV, where surgeons successfully removed the arrow embedded near his abdomen.
West Nile Police region spokesperson Josephine Angucia told New Vision Online that the case was registered as attempted murder (CRB 006/2026), with investigations ongoing.
"No arrests have been made yet, but we’re gathering witness statements to ensure justice,” she said.
Violence condemned
Ogama distanced himself from the attack, urging supporters to reject violence.
"If any backer turns violent, I’ll disown them. We promote peace, not bloodshed,” he said, adding that the incident contradicts party values and pledged to let law enforcement handle the matter.
Afidra, Asia’s supported candidate, could not be reached for comment, but Asia himself recounted the ordeal from his hospital bed.
The constituency’s MP race pits Ogama against Afidra, with other candidates Rashid Droma (PFF) and withdrawn contender Arish Kanu Amin of the National Unity Platform trailing.
Police appealed to the public to remain calm and exercise political tolerance in families and ensure a peaceful end to political campaigns on January 13, 2026.
