Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi has asked Members of Parliament (MPs) to confront and combat corruption.

Ssenyonyi, who says the fight will improve service delivery for the citizens, made the plea during the unveiling of the Opposition's alternative budget for the financial year 2024/2025. The alternative budget is shillings 43 trillion.

According to LOP, corruption is still a big problem in Uganda and that once combatted, the resources that would have been lost to corruption can be used to offer Ugandans a service.

According to the Government corruption watch dog: the Inspectorate of Government, the total cost of corruption in Uganda is estimated to be shillings 9.144 trillion per year, which is equivalent to 44% of total government revenue in 2019.

The Inspectorate of Government is an independent institution charged with the responsibility of eliminating corruption, abuse of authority and of public office.

Ssenyonyi said the alternative budget is a reflection of the Opposition commitment to strengthening communities and show that they are not there to oppose the Government but offer alternatives to what is not going well.

Ssenyonyi also said they want the Government to prioritise education, health and infrastructure development, which according to him is core to the development of the country.
